This Zoning Thing..

...are we sure thats the best thing for Nigeria.

Given that a zoning arrangement was made in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party for the Presidency to rotate between the North and Southern parts of the country, the south is to allow the North to have a shot at the presidency in 2007 in the spirit of fairness, justice and equity.

But what does this zoning formula really mean for Nigeria - I think it means we would miss out on opportunities for us to have great leaders.

Never mind what I think the zoning formula means, Is zoning Nigeria into north and south good enough? Should'nt there be more zones?

Anyways those are just my thoughts!

Hi, Nilla. Interesting blog.

Actually these days, political commentators do speak of up to six zones:

- North-West: some Core-North states

- North-Central: some Middle-Belt

- North-East: a mixture of Middle-Belt and Core-North states

- South-West: Yoruba states

- South-South: non-Igbo and Yoruba states in the South

- South-East: Igbo states

However, you're right that most people still think in terms of North and South.

You're right that with a system of zoning political posts to regions, the best person might not get the post. However, the reality is that Nigerians still identify very strongly with their regions, and as long as this is the case, people will continue to feel aggrieved if a post is continuously given to someone from a particular zone that isn't theirs, even if that person is the best qualified person.

So, for the foreseeable future, we'll have to settle for good enough people from all zones rather than the best people from a particular zone being selected for a particular position. But I think that as the zoning policy goes on and people see that the zone that the person comes from is less important than how he performs, zoning will become less of an issue.

If the zoning thingy means a partial peace and stability in the country I'd go for it, atleast Igbos know for the time being they will come into light being president, rather mess that chance up they rather play low!

Nigeria is too "damn good" that a system could work well for the equalization of the different tribes and geo-political zone!

Hey Nilla hun, Have a good week and Xmas....still waiting on my turkey invite eh!!

I used to see the sense in zoning..and I think thats because I'm from a minority region.
The 6 zones you listed looks better but then implementing it is something else...A zone comes into power every 24 to 48 years!
Still in regards to PDP...Did you read the additional blog reading recommendation?

Thanx for stopping by and do come back.

@ Naijadude
I don't know if partial peace is good enough..are we just waiting for things to start boiling?

Turkey invite ke!! It's going to be goat meat pepper soup :-)

Proper M.U.M.U.s
Maybe when civil unrest starts in Enugu and doesn't quel anytime soon they'll remove Goodluck and put Nnamani as the V.P.
Does tht solve any problem?
